Sojung is a counseling psychology doctoral student at Indiana University Bloomington. She is from Seoul, South Korea and has a background in social psychology and English literature. As someone who has lived in many different places around the world (Korea, Australia, New Orleans, London), Sojung is passionate about understanding how cultural backgrounds influence people’s perspectives. She is experienced in providing multicultural counseling, where she strives to understand clients’ current concerns through their unique cultural lenses and helping them navigate through issues in their own ways.
Sojung has experience helping clients with adjustment issues, identity concerns, sexual dysfunction, bipolar, OCD, romantic relationship concerns, trauma, anxiety issues, body image concern, grief, aging concerns, and many more.
Sojung is also a romantic relationship researcher at Indiana University Bloomington. In the Race and Relationships Lab led by Dr. James Brooks, she is researching diverse issues that can arise in multiracial romantic relationship settings where different cultures intermingle and create diverse emotions on a personal and relational level. She is dedicated to academically exploring diverse cultural differences and applying the findings to her own practice in therapy.
Sojung has also been teaching positive psychology for the past two years in IU Bloomington and is knowledgeable about various positive psychological interventions such as gratitude journaling and recognizing/highlighting character strengths.
As a therapist, Sojung considers herself a companion who walks with clients and shares emotional burden with them on their unique journey. She strives to create a nonjudgmental, safe, and comfortable space to empower clients and help each and every one of them find their own inner tools.
