Dr. Sophie Sutker earned her Master of Arts (MA) and Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) degrees in Clinical Psychology from University of Indianapolis and her graduate certificate in Sexual and Reproductive Health from the School of Public Health at Indiana University. Although her generalist training background enables her to treat a wide variety of mental health concerns across the lifespan, Dr. Sutker has received specialized training through the Veteran’s Health Administration in the treatment of PTSD and addiction. Additionally, she has received specialized training in working with mental health concerns unique to girls, women, & femmes, members of the LGBTQIA+, nonbinary, and/or gender nonconforming communities, and individuals who identify as BIPOC. Through her public health certification and years of training in hospital settings, Dr. Sutker also has experience with mental health concerns unique to people with chronic or terminal illnesses (such as cancer and HIV/AIDS), as well as caretakers or loved ones of individuals with chronic or terminal illnesses.
Dr. Sutker’s approach to therapy is rooted in a foundation of social justice, equity, and respect. She believes that mental health difficulties are not just personal, but systemic as well—that as human beings, our mental health can be impacted by so much more than just our own thoughts or beliefs. By considering the roles of historical/generational trauma, and the impact of different environments or systems a person is a part of, Dr. Sutker strives to provide a safe space for her clients to explore who they are and how they navigate the world around them. With an integrative approach to therapy, she emphasizes a deep understanding of past, present, and future, focused on empowerment, confidence, and resilience.
Dr. Sutker works with children, adolescents, and adults seeking both individual and couples therapy. She has experience working with a wide variety of concerns, such as depression, anxiety, grief, trauma, sexual concerns, and identity concerns. She is trained in trauma-informed therapy, including the use of Prolonged Exposure therapy and Cognitive Processing Therapy, evidenced-based models for treatment of PTSD. She is currently working toward obtaining her certification as a sex therapist by the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT).
